Yang Liuqing (a.k.a. 66) is a leading figure of China’s emerging female skateboarding scene. Back in 2011, 66 found herself in the starting line-up of the Vans Dragon Skate contest as the only female challenger, since then she has been relentless in pushing the boundaries of women’s skateboarding and motivating other girls to pick up a board.
The passion and dedication that 66 gives off has been inspiring many girls in China to participate in skateboarding, yet there is still a lot to overcome – the physical differences in strength, the prejudices on gender and the traditional perception towards women. “People tend to believe more in the abilities of men when they are speaking of the sport industry, but I want to show them the success from girls. We fall a lot in skateboarding but that’s the thing in life we must learn, to accept setbacks, face the reality and to find joy in self-acceptance are the facets that skateboarding should bring to people.” said 66.
