Coolangatta, QLD/AUS (Friday, August 17, 2018) – WSL Asia is excited to announce that the Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup Men’s Qualifying Series (QS) 3,000 event will return to the picturesque peak of Cloud 9 in the Philippines this September. The event will see over 100 of the world’s best surfers descend on the Island of Siargao for the biggest annual sporting event in the Philippines.
Holding a rating of QS3,000 will mean that some of surfing’s biggest up and coming stars will be in attendance as they look to solidify themselves a spot on the elite Championship Tour (CT).
With such amazing waves on offer, the event will once again be broadcast live to the world at worldsurfleague.com giving surf fans a front row seat to an incredible show of tube-riding and performance surfing. WSL Asia General Manager Steve Robertson is stoked to see the continuation and development of another great WSL event in the Asia region.
“In line with everything we are doing in the Asia Region, The Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup 2018 is a magnificent event,” Robertson said. “One of the World’s Classic Waves and as a QS3,000 this event attracts a superb international field of surfers who come to the Philippines to score amazing barrels and surf for essential QS points and prize money – A live broadcast that is a must for the fans.”
Mayor of General Luna Jamie Russilon is known as the ‘God Father’ of surfing in the Philippines due to his ongoing support of the Filipino surf industry and surfing events in the area. Seeing the Siargao Surfing Cup grow into the international event it is today is one of Mayor Russilon’s proudest achievements and he and the City of General Luna are excited for their idyllic home to be shown to the world.
“We are very happy and proud to be hosting this year’s QS here in General Luna at the famous Cloud 9 wave,” Mayor Russilon said. “We welcome all of the competitors here and hope that this event will help increase tourism and as a consequence brighten the future of our citizens and all of the people of the Philippines.”
The Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup will run from September 28 – October 4 2018. The event will be broadcast live on the World Surf League site. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
