There’s a little bit of a daredevil in all of us. The thrill of speed and the rush of adrenalin is a definite addiction, one that, albeit legal, is not suitable for the less than coordinated. Consequently, someone who can rise to the heights of exceptional athleticism in unique and exciting sports is someone we’re all eager to see, and among all the awesome Filipino athletes we have, Dandoy Tongco is one of the best ones to watch out for.
Dandoy Tongco just finished 1st place in the September Rush Longboarding Competition held last September 3-4, 2016 at Park Balakayo, General Santos City. Longboarding, a cross between skateboarding and surfing on concrete, is gaining popularity as one of the most dynamic and exhilarating sports in the world.
In the Philippines, practitioners of this sport all know that the annual September Rush Longboarding event held by Longboard Dadiangas in partnership with Loser Skateboard Team and the Grind, is where all the elite of the longboarding world come together and battle it out to find out who the top dog is. This year, Dandoy Tongco beat out fellow Cebuano and longboarding demi-god Tito Sumicad to bag the championship in the event’s Masters Division.
Dandoy Tongco started out in this sport by helping build and shape boards that are being supplied to the growing skating community in the provinces. Eventually, DC, an international action sports brand that the Primer Group of Companies brought to the Philippines, heard about Dandoy and began supporting him and several of his fellow longboarders, Arjun Jimenez, Ering Ricablanca, Rico Ricablanca, Epos Falcone, and Bryan Tongco. It wasn’t long before Dandoy was making a name for himself in longboarding and in 2013, DC brought Dandoy to Spain to be part of a longboarding documentary produced by Canadian longboarding champion Patrick Switzer. He has travelled to other places since then, making it known to the rest of the world that longboarding is alive, well, and reigning in the Philippines.
Being the best is not good enough for Dandoy. He began a Mobile Skate School program in Cebu, Dumaguete, Leyte, Surigao del Sur, and Surigao del Norte. This program’s strong focus on environmental consciousness and physical well-being through wellplanned activities is making a lasting impact with the local communities nationwide.
By helping to change lives through what he does best, Dandoy ceased to become just an athlete, but an inspiration to youths all over the country. It is initiatives like these that make Dandoy a true DC ambassador and C.O.R.E. athlete.
C.O.R.E. (Center for Outdoor Recreation and Expedition) is the advocacy arm of the Primer Group of Companies. C.O.R.E. believes in the capability, talent, and strength of the Filipino even in the face of adversity and struggle. The team behind this endeavour carefully handpicks inspiring personalities like Dandoy whose athletic achievements and creative pursuits embody hope that you can live the life you want if you just don’t quit.
