Christian Tio is the kiteboarding wunderkind that the island paradise of Boracay can claim as its own. Spending most days in the water, he pushes himself for bigger air and skills on his journey to the top of the kiteboarding world rankings.

Born and bred in Boracay, Philippines, Christian began his kiteobarding journey at the age of 7. Guided by his Norwegian father and Filipino mom who were equally immersed in the sport, he began training in between school work, soccer practice and intense video gaming sessions.

At age 10, he took his Vegas kites and board from his home spot of Bulabog Beach in Boracay to the foreign waters of Pranburi, Thailand for his first professional dip at the KTA – Asian Kiteboard Championships Tour. After being matched up against riders twice his age and being stung by jellyfish, he found his name at the bottom of the list.

Christian was far from discouraged. On his return home, “I pushed myself even more. (Seeing all those people riding) motivated me (to do better).”

Two – two hour sessions each day with kiteboarding legend Khristopher Ken Nacor transformed the Filipino-Norwegian from a relative unknown to world #2 in the Junior Men’s division within a few short years.

2016 was indeed a good year for Christian. He recently, won 1st place of the Freestyle category of the 2nd Leg of Philippine Kiteboarding Tour. It was a tight battle, but Christian showed his composure and let his experience in gain more grounds during the competition.

These days, he is working on improving his skill set, particularly the double handle pass and the double back mobe; and setting a new personal record higher than the 5-meter jumps he currently executes.
