3033

Debuting this year, the Bicol Surf Jam is the first ever Regional Surf Circuit Competition in the Philippines. It was conceptualized to provide a venue for camaraderie, competition, and excellence in the pursuit of creating a united community of  local surfers from Bicol and to showcase the local surf talents from the said region.

We’ve been talking about this event a few years back. Together with the late Ezra Efondo and Sorsogon’s surf pride Bidge Villarroya who has been the forefront in promoting his surf town Sorsogon, as one of the best surf destinations in the Philippines. Kudos to the men & women who worked behind the scene committed to organize the said event and give recognition to talented Bicolano surfers.

The 1st leg of Bicol Surf Jam was held in Bagasbas Beach last September 20, 2015 in Daet, Camarines Norte.

“Bicol Surf Jam was originally planned as the Bicol triple crown, I pitched the idea to Ryan Vito of Daet and Alan Tanael of catanduanes in 2010-2011.” says Bidge Villaroya.

“But it was Ezra who really latched on the idea when we met during August 2012. The agreement was that I would focus on local comps in Gubat to gain technical know how of running a surf comp, Ezra would do the same in catanduanes but he focused on Catanduanes Reef Break. After Ezra died the idea fizzled out, but it was already planted with Onyo and Hempoy of Daet who pitched it to Jay love, and Jay love pitched it to Kat Bolina. And that’s when Bicol surf jam really took off, they contacted me that they wanted it to happen so I organized Lunad sa Balod, a national surf competition here in Gubat to host the 2nd leg of the circuit.” Villaroya added.
