10 October 2014, Gianyar-Bali: At the start of the Komune Bali Pro presented by The Mad Hueys at Keramas this morning, there were 5 Indonesian surfers vying for spots in the quarterfinals against 11 Australians, and by the time the action was called off for the day it was Oney Anwar and Dede Suryana with semifinal spots and a chance for an event win tomorrow.
Areal specialist Dede Suryana.
Lakey Peak’s Oney Anwar continued his impressive run of heat wins and high scoring maneuvers to first best former WCT competitor Dean Morrison, Jordin Watson and Asher Wales in Heat 1 of Round 3, then pull off a sensational win over Michael Wright in Quarterfinal 1 with a double air reverse that earned him a 9.5 point score after being behind for the majority of the 30 minute heat.
Oney will be up against Dean Morrison in Semifinal 1 tomorrow morning.
West Java’s Dede Suryana took down Mitchell Parkinson (2nd), Mitchell James (3rd), and Nick Vasicek (4th) in his Round 3 heat to advance to the quarterfinals, where he bested current ASC champion Raditya Rondi in the final heat of the day.
“I was so happy to get that Round 3 win, as I was up against some really good surfers there and knew it would be a tough heat,” said Dede. “It was actually a bit more relaxing in the quarterfinals up against Raditya. He was joking with me and we were talking, just relaxing and not hassling with each other. Only once we had to hassle a bit for one wave, but it wasn’t really hassling, we both just wanted to win. I’m so stoked to get into the semifinals, it’s so great. My wife had our baby girl yesterday, and it’s my birthday tomorrow, so everything is going just great!” he added. He went on to say how supportive his wife was, telling him to stay at the comp and try to win, and thanking his sponsors for making it possible for him to compete on all the ASC tour events.
Bowing out on the day were Lee Wilson and Gazali Hamzah. Lee went down in Heat 2 of Round 3, which Gazali won, but then Gazali fell to the tardy but every potent force that is Dean Morrison in Quarterfinal 2.
Tomorrow’s call is for a possible 8:30 am start, which will see the remaining Quarterfinal 4 with Mitchell Parkinson taking on James Taipan Woods to see who will take on Dede Suryana in Semifinal 2.
The event is expected to finish tomorrow.
The Komune Bali Pro presented by The Mad Hueys offers both ASP QS and Asian Surfing Championship (ASC) points to all surfers and has teamed up with Garuda Indonesia as the official airline partner and GoPro as the official camera of the event.
