Rip Curl GromSearch heads to Medewi on the May 26th for stop number 7 of the 2013 series

Bali, Indonesia: Groms from all over Indonesia are preparing for the cobblestone point break waves of Medewi on Bali’s North West Coast to compete in the Ultimate Grom Contest Series next weekend in Medewi, Bali. With 6 stages already complete taking place all over Indonesia, It’s the small coastal village of Medewi which tales centre-stage for the next stop to find Indonesia’s best Groms.

Coming fresh off the last stop in Lakey Peak Sumbawa on the 12th May where the Groms faced heavy barrels, Groms are now preparing for the mellow long rippable walls of Medewi.

Rip Curl’s Top Team rider Oney Anwar took time off in his busy schedule on the World Qualifying Series to help with the last event in his home town of Lakey Peak commenting. The Waves were pumping for the last event – the morning was perfect 3-4 feet and glassy giving the boys a good chance to show off their skills. The kids were ripping and having so much fun! The level of Surfing was really strong too.. It’s good to be back in Lakey judging and enjoying the competition with the Groms from my home town!”

Competition was very tight in both divisions during the Lakey Peak leg of the series. With first place in the under 14’s finally attributed to the powerful Ompu who steamrolled his way to victory with 11.5 points, followed by Arpad (10.4 points), Daniel (8.1 points), Irfan (7.3 points) Bronson (6.8 points) and Idris (5 points). The four first winners were rewarded with Rip Curl goodie bags, Stickers and Sticky Bumps wax.

In the Final of the “Under 16” division, around 20 Groms competed for the coveted prize of a spot in the National finals to be held in Bali in September. The day was not short of drama – During round 1 Dedi Supriadin charged one of the biggest sets of the day resulting in a heavy fall, broken leash and lost board.. After being pounded by the remainder of the set, Dedi finally made it to the channel where he was reunited with his board. One bonus was his beating won him the best wipe out of the day and some free goodies!

Riman from Lombok took first place in the main Under 16’s division (13.5 points) thanks to a combination of perfect turns and tube rides. Close behind Riman was Andre Anwar from Lakey Peak (11.6 points), Max De-Santis of Hawaii (9.8 points) and Febri from Java (8 points).

Given that Riman already won a ticket to National Finals at previous GromSearch event earlier in the series, the official winners who join National Finals are Andre Anwar, Febby and Finda from Lakey Peak and Febri from Java.

As far as the expression sessions were concerned, it is Gazalin from Lakey Peak who won the Best Wave thanks to a lengthy and well-maneuvered wave. Halik, also from Lakey Peak differentiated from others by an outstanding figure which brought him to win the best trick of the day.

In addition to the exciting performances in the water, Groms voluntarily cleaned up the beach fulfilling their commitment to environment helping preserve nature and make a great example to other locals and surfers in the area. The Grommets also enjoyed playing games such as a running competition and “the last chair standing” game in a very friendly atmosphere.

21 May 2013, Bali-Indonesia: As part of the annual Big Bali Eco Weekend that is sponsored by Quiksilver Indonesia, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, and Garuda Indonesia on June 22-23^rd, Quiksilver is offering 70 lucky surfers a chance to join with a list of local and international surfing legends to paddle out into an empty Uluwatu lineup for the Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge teams event on June 23^rd.

The Quiksilver Uluwatu Challenge will see a group of Bali legends that includes Made Kasim, Made Switra, Gede Narmada, Made Lana, Ketut Pitur, Rizal Tanjung and Tipi Jabrik, joining Quiksilver International legends Mark Richards, Simon Anderson, Peter McCabe, Martin Potter, Jake Paterson, Lisa Andersen, and Matt Hoy as the captains for the team format event, where 70 open slots are available for those who dream to surf with and against some of the world’s most legendary surfers in two 30-minute heats.

This event is being championed by Quiksilver as a way to raise money in support of their ongoing environmental efforts together with Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Garuda Indonesia in Bali, with the entry proceeds going towards solving the current water pollution issues at Uluwatu as well as cleaning up Bali’s beaches, educating the local communities on environmental and health issues, and protecting the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle population.

“By having the event at Uluwatu, where surfing in Bali was first exposed to the world, we are honoring Uluwatu’s contribution to tourism, and the key international and local surfers that made it all happen. At the same time we need to highlight the pressure that Bali is under as a result of the increase in tourism and the need to improve waste management infrastructure,” explained Quiksilver South Asia Marketing Executive, Sammy Gosling.

The annual Big Bali Eco Weekend is an educational event that is held in Bali each year as a Corporate Social Responsibility effort through the partnership of Quiksilver Indonesia, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, and Garuda Indonesia Airlines to bring together corporations, governmental agencies, private businesses and the local community in an effort to bring about a positive change and create sustainable solutions to Bali’s current trash and infrastructure problems, which have a tremendously negative impact on the precious ocean waters and beaches that surfers and traveling tourists value so highly.

Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil started this CSR effort in 2008, andwere joined last year by Garuda Indonesia. They now have three beach tractors, two Barber surf rakes, two rubbish transport trucks, an educational van, and a 4-Wheeler to rescue turtles, in addition to employing 70 local people to clean up the beaches each day, establishing and supporting the Kuta Beach Turtle Conservation Center, and providing uniforms and supplies to the Bali Lifeguards.

LB Supermarket and Skate Zamboanga: Summer Skate Jam in Zamboanga City Highlights

May 12, 2013, Tumaga, Zamboanga City, Philippines: It was indeed a perfect competition day as LB Supermarket supports Skate Zamboanga to promote skateboarding in Asia’s Latin City.

Over a hundred spectators gathered in LB Supermarket to witness the best skateboarders in the city. As the competition unfolds, most of the competitors showed their best tricks to win the approval of the judges. “It has been a month long preparation, making the ramps, gathering of sponsors and promoting the event,” says Seed Sisam of Seed Fingerboards, the main organizer of the contest. “The event is in coordination of LB Supermarket’s 13th year anniversary and we’re privilege that LB Supermarket supported our event,” he added.

Summer Skate Jam was one of the most celebrated skateboarding events in Zamboanga City. The local skateboarding community in Zamboanga City will continue to uplift skateboarding as a sport and to push their goal in uniting every skateboarders in the city.

May 11, 2013, Mall of Asia Arena, Philippines: The crowd is roaring and the stage is all set. The best Philippine rock bands are ready to invade the Mall of Asia Arena. It was the biggest rock event concert presented by Vans, SM Department Store and Monster Energy Drink, the Vans Summer Music Jam 2013 featured some of the best talent in Philippine rock music scene like Save Me Hollywood, Moonstar88, The Chonkeys, Rocksteddy, Franco, Urbandub and Kamikazee.

Launched in the Philippines in 2012, Monster Energy Drink has been fueling the action sport scene by supporting various events in boardsports and motorsports. Now, with its recent success in the market, Monster Energy Drink together with Vans have spearheaded a convergence of the best rock bands in the country.

Vans, a trademark that started in 1966 was a big part of the skateboarding revolution, supporting the best skateboarders like Tony Alva and Christian Hosoi. Now Vans has taken the brand into a new level here in the Philippines supporting the local skateboarding and music scene, establishing a solid grassroot foundation.

Flow: SurfYogaSamba Summer Retreat in Boracay Highlights

Flow:SurfYogaSamba together with Lifestyle Network’s Summer Soul, Havaianas and Aura Athletica invaded the sunny shores of Boracay last April 18-21 at Boracay Terraces Resort for 4 days of Surf, Yoga and Samba plus more!

For the very first time, Flow teamed up with Paolo Soler of Philippine Surfing Academy (PSA) for a surf session at the wave pool of Crown Regency in Station 2. Surfing in a wave pool is perfect for beginners since waves are more consistent and in a controlled environment. Paolo first conducted land lessons, teaching the basics of surfing such as the parts of the surfboard, how to handle a surfboard, proper paddling and popping up. Next, participants each got a board, paddled to the line up in the wave pool and took turns catching waves. Surfing in a wave pool can get really tiring as waves come continuously but everyone was stoked nonetheless.

Bri Manglapus, a certified Rocket Yoga teacher and PSA’s resident yoga instructor, led an invigorating Vinyasa class at Boracay Terraces Resort during sunset. Participants enjoyed Nyogi Coconut Water refreshments after that challenging yoga session.

Imperatriz Filipinense (formerly known as Escola de Samba de Manila) performed live drumming and taught simple Samba dance moves to all guests at the Summer Soul Bohemian Fair and also during cocktails at Discovery Shores.

Monica Manzano, Flow’s yoga teacher, guided participants into a therapeutic sunrise Yin Yoga class at Discovery Shores beachfront. Monica stressed the importance of rest in order to be fully active as the main aim and definition of yoga is balance, after all. Since it was a beach yoga class, some students even used their Lagu beach blankets as yoga mats!

One afternoon, Alessa Lanot, DIY queen of Life After Breakfast blog, taught everyone how to make rubberstamps at our Crafternoon workshop paired with happy hour cocktails at Two Seasons.

The Flow team conducted a Green Smoothie and Live Foods workshop at the Summer Soul Bohemian Fair using healthy ingredients such as Moringana malunggay capsules in recipes as well as the trusty Breville power blender which was used to make green smoothies. Lifestyle Network host, Wally De Mesa, interviewed Denise, Monica and Noelle on-stage asking about the benefits of drinking green smoothies and eating live foods.

Aside from participating in these awesome activities, everyone received a reusable canvas bag packed with goodies from Havaianas, Moringana, Travel Magazine, Turista Magazine, gift certificates from Browhaus, Strip, Beyond Yoga, Sunshine Kitchen, Rawlicious and a premium prize from Panda Sunglasses was raffled off to one lucky participant!
