COOLANGATTA, Queensland/AUS (Wednesday, June 28, 2017) –  The World Surf League (WSL) Asia Region is delighted to announce yet another exciting Qualifying Series event in Indonesia.  The Hello Pacitan Pro 2017 Men’s QS1,000 event will be held from August 16-20 on the rugged coast of East Java in the small town of Watu Karung, which is about an hours drive from Pacitan.

The competition venue is spectacular, as it boasts a barreling lefthander on the east side of the bay and a righthand slab on the west side; each working on different swells, winds and tides, providing a dreamy choice of world class reef break options on the same stretch of beach.

This will be the first time a professional international surfing competition has ever been held in this location, although travelling pro surfers have been coming and enjoying this wave now for several years.

Hello Pacitan Pro 2017 will see some of the world’s best Qualifying Series men surfers looking to get deeply barreled in the world class left and righthander of Watu Karung and come home with the 1,000 Qualifying Series points to add to their WSL QS Rankings.

17-year-old Indonesian Rio Waida was runner-up at last year’s Hello Pacitan event and is currently number 2 on WSL Asia QS Rankings.

“I’m so excited to have this event at Watu Karung this year, it is just amazing,” Waida said.  “I think everyone wants to join, for sure. And the waves are amazing too, tubes both right and left. The judges will score on who gets deepest in the barrel, so look for everybody to be going super big.”

Mr Sartono, Member of Parliament in Indonesia’s House of Representatives was born and raised in Pacitan, and spent a lot of time in Bali so understands the value of surfing for tourism.

“After the success of last year’s ASC sanctioned Hello Pacitan 2016, we wanted to increase the level of the event this year so we invited the WSL to join us for Hello Pacitan 2017,” Sartono said. “We hope this will help spread the name of Pacitan as a beautiful tourism destination nationally and internationally, and to focus the eyes of the surfing world on this wave rich area as a favourite surfing destination.”
