A terrible and heartbreaking news struck the Philippine surfing scene as one of the most promising surfer from Siargao Island succumbed in a tragic road accident last April 19, 2017. Mike Escoltura is only 20 years old and recently finished his college degree in Criminology.

Mike Escoltura has a very infectious smile that radiates toward his kind heart. He don’t drink or smoke and he was focused in his goal, finishing college and earn a degree sacrificing local and international surf competition opportunities. Photo by Alwyn Uytingco

During our last conversation and interview with Mike last year, he encouraged everyone to prioritize education.

May time sa pag susurfing at may time sa pag aaral. Which is sakin ang pag aaral importante talaga. Hindi yan mawawala. Yun surfing nandyan lang yan palagi kaya sakin, pinapriority ko talaga pag aaral.” ( There’s a time for surfing and there is a time for studies. Which is for me, education is more important than surfing. Education will never be taken away. Surfing is just there that’s why I really prioritize education.)- Mike Escoltura.

To the Escoltura family, we would like to extend our deepest condolences. If you said a prayer for Mike, shared posts and photos about him, donated financial assistance, and held his family in your heart, thank you very much.
