“I know the world water crisis is solvable. It’s just people not willing to put in the time or do the work,” says Jon Rose, former pro surfer and founder of Waves For Water. Living in a country where water seems abundant, there is a widespread misconception that everyone has access to clean, potable water. Fresh water is scarce in remote islands. Disease-free water is rare in poor urban communities. The water crisis is real and it’s happening in over 7,000 islands of the Philippines.

On World Water Day, March 22, Waves For Water Philippines and ASpace Philippines work hand in hand to share and celebrate Jon Rose’s story in a fundraising and special screening of Waves For Water documentary created by Red Bull TV and Max Haidbauer. The feature length documentary Waves For Water tells the story of Jon Rose’s humble mission to provide clean water to everyone who needs it. Driven by his passion for surfing, he was exposed to the crisis hidden beyond the perfect waves and powdery white sand. This serendipitous discovery propelled him to do more, consequently creating his organization’s mantra: Do what you love and help along the way.

Founded in 2009, the Waves For Water journey began in Indonesia. Jon Rose, with only 10 portable water filters in tow and a headstrong mindset, unexpectedly was one of the first responders when a disastrous earthquake hit Padang, Indonesia. And the rest of his humanitarian expedition was history. From a one-off surf trip in Sumatra, the organization has grown into an international NGO with partners like Hurley, Neymar Jr., Paypal, BMW and more.

Apart from the screening, Waves For Water Philippines is also raising funds through an exhibit that will simultaneously run in Cebu and Manila on the same day. Photographers Artu Nepomuceno, Meg Manzano, Takeshi Shinohara, and Aaron Palabayab, who are also Clean Water Couriers, will showcase and sell limited prints. Take part of this global screening by visiting Red Bull TV, sharing the stories, and getting involved in the Waves For Water movement. All proceeds of this event will go to Waves For Water.
