Top RP team riders Carlo dela Torre and Sam Bermudez emerged the overall winners despite the impressive upset wins by Mark Griffin and Elisabeth Fuchs recently in the final leg of the “1st Monster Energy Drink Philippine Qualifier Series (PQS) presented by Safeguard Active” at the DECA Homes-Clark Wake Park in Bgy. Margot, Angeles City.
Dela Torre emerged the overall Men’s Wakeboard champion
Dela Torre emerged the overall Men’s Wakeboard champion while Bermudez captured the overall Women’s Wakeboard crown after accumulating the highest points in this event organized by the Wake Boarding and Waterskiing Association of the Philippines (WWASP), a member of the Philipppine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee under the helm of president JV Borromeo, and supported by DECA Homes, Stokedinc, Ripcurl, Electric Visual, CWB and CTRL Wakeboards.

De la Torre wrapped up the series with 543 points to win the title over Symon Cantos (491 pts.), Davao bets Albert Lehman (356 pts.) and Zech Stephenson (346 pts.) and Christian Joson (317 pts.).
Bermudez tallied a perfect 600 points to clinch the Women’s Wakeboard plum over Andrea Tanjangco (541 pts.), third placers Pat Espeleta and Alex Andrada (171 pts.), fourth placers Cath delos Santos and Roxy Barrios (158 pts.) and fifth placer Alma Tanwangco (146 pts.).

The day belonged to long-time RP team rider Mark Griffin, a half-Filipino, half-British blooded rider who pulled a big upset victory in the Open Men’s Wakeboard over runner-up Albert Lehman of Davao, Symon Cantos and top RP rider Carlo dela Torre.

He set the course on fire with his smooth display of impressive tough tricks, capped by a tough off-axis 360 spin that earned the nod of the three-man judging committee headed by IWWF 4-star South Korean judge Jung SangHan.

Griffin steered the RP Mixed WakeboardingTeam to a bronze medal in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. Showing that he’s back in top form, Griffin will be a big boost to the WWASP RP Team’s quest for honors as he competes alongside Dela Torre and Bermudez in the forthcoming “IWWF Worlds: 2012 Cable Wakeboard World Championships presented by DECA Homes” slated November 6-11 in this same venue together with the top two finishers in the other classes.
Fuchs did the same in the Open Women’s Wakeboard but gets no points as a guest rider, thus giving Bermudez the outright victory with Andrea Tanjangco and Roxy Barrios claiming the runner-up and third place honors.
Sharing the limelight were 15-year-old Angelo Linao and Mikee Selga who completed double title feats.

Linao captured the Junior Men’s crown with 571 points over Carlo Beltran and Polly Aniciete, and the Junior Men’s Wakeskate plum over Davao’s Joshua Stephenson and Carlo Beltran while Selga copped the Junior Women’s Wakeskate over Davao’s Celina Cembrano and Nicole Hudson, and the Girls’ crown over Kelsey Albano.
Winning the other titles were Moe Gomez in the Men’s Wakeskate over Christian Joson and Fermin Tamayo; Cebu-based Swede Susan Larsson in the Women’s Wakeskate over Bermudez and Michiko Kogure; JV Tanjangco in the Men’s Masters over Justin Valdez and Ron Aldover; Isabel Gomez in the Junior Ladies over Cembrano, Angela Clores and Hudson; and Don Moody in the Boy’s division over Cyrus Beltran and JJ Hernandez.
