14 year old surf athlete, Sylvester Bactad, from Barangay Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales who recently competed at the 8th Odyssey Waves National Surfing Competition in Calicoan Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar was featured on PTV Channel 4 newest TV show, I-Connect, a social media TV show in the Philippines.

When asked during his interview, Sylvester started surfing the waves of the famous Magic Left surf spot in Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales when he was 10 years old. You will see him in the beach more often surfing his favorite spot. His progression and determination gave him the advantage to win the recent local surfing competition in Pundaquit.

Sylvester’s dream is to surf the best surf spots in the Philippines. It came true with the help of the surfing community through social media. I-Connect TV host and PSA surf coach Paolo Soler saw Sylverster ripping the waves of Magic Left a couple of months ago. Paolo was amazed by his skills in handling waves double his size. Through Paolo Soler’s Facebook message asking for support in the surfing community, we were able to have enough budget to fly Sylvester and his guardian Reynald Liwarin in Guiuan to compete for the the Junior’s division of the 8th Odyssey National Surfing Competition last October 9-14, 2012.
Aside from surfing the best waves of ABCD beach in Calicoan Island, Sylvester was able to surf the clear reef breaks of Matarinao Bay in Salcedo, Eastern Samar.

A simple act of generosity made a huge impact to Sylvester’s surfing career. This experience will be forever engraved in his heart and will help him gain more confidence in his surfng skills. We believe that this young talented surfer from Barangay Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales has the potential to represent our country in an international surfing competition in the future.
