Bermudez copped the top plum in the Open Women’s Wakeboard via a repeat over Andrea Tanjangco with Alex Andrada claiming third place honors in this event organized by the Wake Boarding and Waterskiing Association of the Philippines (WWASP) under the helm of president JV Borromeo and supported by DECA Homes, Monster Energy Drink, Safeguard, Stokedinc, Ripcurl, Electric Visual, CWB and CTRL Wakeboards.

But the great talents shown by the Davao riders set the competition to a higher level that only two Manila top guns — Junior Men’s champion and Open Wakeskate Junior Men’s runner-up Angelo Linao and Masters Men’s champion JV Tanjangco – managed to pull through with major title-clinching feats.

Even at the start, the Davao riders set the pace with their display of amazing stunts and near-flawless performances that compelled even the Manila riders to step up their games.

And the exciting showdown was sustained up to the Open Wakeboard Men’s class which eventually boiled down to a tight duel between Stephenson and top RP men’s rider Carlo dela Torre.

While Dela Torre flashed his usual top form, his Davaoeno rival wowed the crowd with his smooth execution of more difficult tricks that unanimously earned the nod of board of judges led by IWWF 4-star judgeKorean based Jung SangHan.

Dela Torre tried to upstage Stephenson’s stint on his second run, however, his efforts were not enough to impress the judges better than the Davao bet who had the home court advantage as he settledfor the runner-up honors.

Another Davao bet Alex Lehman grabbed third place while Angelo Cordero, Christian Joson and Symon Cantos ended fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Zech’s younger brother Joshua Stephenson clinched the Open Wakeskate men’s title while Jose Antonio Hernandez and Franco Carabuena made it a 1-2 finish for Davao in the Boys division.

Davao’s top female rider Brenda Bagsik prevailed in the Masters Women’s class over Alma Tanjangco.while Celina Cembrano bagged the Junior Ladies crown.

Among the other Davao riders who also made their marks were Junior Men’s runner-up Lorenzo Carabuena, Masters Men’s runner-up Peter Abella, and Open Wakeskate Men’s runner-up Obi Cembrano who almost denied champion Moe Gomez of his back-to-back triumph.

Borromeo was elated and excited over the emergence of top caliber Davao discoveries who are potential goldmines for the Philippines in international competitions such as the SEA Games, Asian Games and the forthcoming “IWWF Worlds” which the country will host on Nov. 6-11 at the newly-constructed world standard DECA Clark Wake Park.

The final stop of the Monster Energy Drink Philippine Qualifier Series is set on October 20 at the DECA Clark Wake Park.
