Once again, Guiuan will host a national surfing competition which will highlight the municipality of Guiuan as the surfing capital of Eastern Visayas. Now, here are some facts about Guiuan.
Guiuan plays a big role in the history of the Philippines. Its history dates back in the time where Magellan has stepped his foot on the Island of Homonhon on March 16, 1521 which is two hour boat ride from the port of Guiuan.
In 1944, the American forces have landed on the island of Suluan where they fought with the Japanese soldiers. It was considered as their first battle in the Philippine territory three days before Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur invades the beach of Leyte. Other islands and islets are Sulungan, Suluan, Manicani, Victory Island, Tubabao and Calicoan which is envisioned to become the surfing capital of Samar and a top tourist destination in Eastern Visayas.
We went in Guiuan last year and learned so many things about it. Surprisingly, the municipality of Guiuan has no recognition of their founding anniversary because Guiuan existed even before the Spaniards came. Now, we are excited to go back to Guiuan and surf the waves of ABCD Beach in Calicoan Island.
