Pinoy Wake Camp (PWC): Pushing the Wakeboarding Scene in the Queen City of the South

Pinoy Wake Camp (PWC) Cebu Edition was a resounding success for both the camp and its participants. The eight day camp held between May26-June3 in the beautiful Danasan Eco Adventure Park in Danao Cebu was full of progression and above all fun for the students and the coaches.

The camp was blessed with a good number of students from all walks of life: expats, former students based in Manila, whole Cebuano families finishing off their summer vacations and of course, core board sport enthusiasts looking to widen their scope into wakeboarding.

Cebu, having already established itself with its own progressive board sports scene (in particular downhill longboarding, skimboarding and surfing) is finally putting its foot down and trying to catch up with the sport of wakeboarding. With Danasan Eco Adventure Park being the first to provide cable wakeboarding to the Cebuanos and the greater Visayan region, it was a logical choice for the country’s premier wakeboarding camp, the PWC. PWC held their instructionals in Danasan and gave the Cebuanos coaching that really focused on learning the fundamentals of wakeboarding to help them develop their own unique style down the road. Both head coaches and 2011 sea games Medalists Samantha Bermudez and Carlo “C-lo” Dela Torre agreed this had to be one of the most fun and fruitful camps they have had the pleasure of running. PWC being in operation already for the past 2 years is pushing for four full fledged wake camps for 2012, with Cebu being its 2nd leg.

“Danasan Eco Adventure Park had to be one of the best places for C-lo and I to coach. We had a mixed demographic of students from all over like Japan, US, Britain, Doctors, Music Majors, old students from Manila, and of course Cebuanos young and young at heart and all were such ideal students because they listened to instructions and executed well. It didn’t feel like baby sitting, it felt like we were teaching friends, which is always great as a coach. And of course trying out their other activities in the park like ATV riding, jumping off waterfalls, zip-lining, horse back riding and just relaxing in the mountains in general was awesome” Samantha says.

High flying Carlo “C-Lo” dela Torre on the move.

“Cebu is definitely the missing link right now as far as wakeboarding and wakeskating is concerned in the Philippines. I know they have a great downhill longboarding scene here, and other alternative sports, but after this camp its apparent to me that they are hungry for good knowledge and have a great potential for this sport. Their progression was wild, and im looking forward to coming back to help them get pointed towards the right direction” C-lo adds.

Pinoy Wake Camp would like to thank all their students who joined the 2nd leg of the PWC. We hope to see you guys again on the next one planned for October.
