Northern Samar: A New Boardsports Destination in the Philippines

Situated on the eastern part of the Philippines and an hour plane ride from Manila, Northern Samar has a lot of boardsport activities to offer. More than the unique experience, simple way of living and a strong bonded community, Northern Samar will be the next big thing for surfing, downhill longboarding, skimboarding and skateboarding.

With its all year round surfing season, thunderous sounds of waves across the shore break, I haven’t seen any surfers ripping out those perfect barreling waves that will give you a jaw dropping awe on the long coastline of Catarman. As I saw those set of waves coming from the Pacific Ocean, the excitement went on to me, showing my child like attitude towards a very beautiful surf spot that’s been waiting for surfers to enjoy what those continuous set of waves can offer.

The long coastline of Northern Samar which directly facing the Pacific Ocean makes the province one of the best surfing destination in the Philippines.

What I really like about Northern Samar is its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Catarman and its neighboring town will give you satisfaction and appreciate a simple way of living close to mother nature. The town of Lavezares offers its urethane virgin downhill spots and its port, the gateway to Northern Samar’s pride, the Biri Rock Formations.

This 2km urethane virgin downhill spot in Northern Samar will soon welcome downhill longboarders as the first downhill competition in their province will be fulfilled this 2012

The so called the Philippine dream, a hidden surfing spot that generates 8 to 12 ft waves and sometimes almost 15 ft of waves which only professional surfers can enjoy also can be found in Biri Islands, Northern Samar.

The Northern Samar Outdoor Federation, a fusion of local skimboarding and longboarding community together with other outdoor sports group joined forces and  formed a body which will help promote and strengthen the ecosport- tourism campaign of Northern Samar.

Last year, Skimboarding competition was part of the sports fest of University of Eastern Philippines in Catarman, which is the biggest university in Northern Samar. Knowing that boardsports has been part of the university’s annual sports competition which is largely dominated by basketball, volleyball and other traditional sports makes us more amazed and excited for Northern Samar.

Northern Samar will soon to be known as one of the best boardports destination in the Philippines as we help them develop a brand that will make every boardsports enthusiast be aware of what Northern Samar can offer.
